At my school they offer seminars called Success Series. I attended three. One of the three really stuck out to me. This presentation was given by a woman named Erica Upshaw. Her presentaion was called: Keeping Friendship Alive, and it was about young people and drinking. She started by showing a slide show of young people who had too much to drink and that cost them their lives. The last picture in the slide show was her brother.
She talked about he was her best friend and was a good person. They went to the same college and back then is when people starting experimenting with drugs and alcohol. The one time her brother drank more than he should, he died. She told us about what happened and how he possible could have gotten medical attention in time. It was almost like a freak accident.
Then she went on to tell us about the safety about alcohol. Most people drink, even underage, but some dont know their limits. She showed us what your limit would be based on your height and weight. Most exceed what they are capable of drinking and thats how they end up dying. She also told us what to do about our friends that might have drinking problems. She showed us websites and also how to talk to our friends. Good friends wouldnt let their friends get sloppy drunk and possibly risk their lives for 30 minutes of “fun”.
Attending this one session helped me greatly. I have friends that drink underage now. I always watch over them to make sure either they dont hurt themselves or pass out. I have one friend in particular that likes to get sloppy drunk all the time. Everytime she does, I’m always there to babysit her and nurse her back to sobriety. It gets annoying and once I even tried an intervention on her. Now if I talk ot her about her problem again I know the right way to go about the situation where it won’t seem like im attacking her. I also learned that it only takes one time to mess up and in a way this scared me from every wanting to drink underage. I dont even think I would want to drink once I am of age.
